New for 2019: CREATE

Some thoughts as the first day of this new year comes to a close:

Instead of setting New Year’s resolutions, I (along with thousands of others inspired by One Word 365) pick a word each year around which to center my thoughts.

I have been tossing around the word “create” as my word for 2019. Sitting with this word the past few days has already been a refreshing exercise for my anxious mind. I love the process of creating, and I relish getting lost in a good project – whether it is writing, reading, cooking, sanding old doors, assembling grills – it doesn’t matter. The very practice of creating brings clarity and settledness to my world.

Last year, my word was “expect.”

In one sense, I still find myself caught waiting for some of my selfish “expectations” to be met. I have spent a considerable amount of time and energy transitioning into new workplaces, and I am admittedly frustrated by the job hunting process.

In another sense, 2018 brought unexpected gifts of travel, fun, new (albeit temporary) jobs, and deepening relationships for which I am truly grateful.

As the new-car-smell of this new year starts to fade into the distance, I will come back to my practice of examining my word from all angles. The good, the bad, and the ugly of “create” includes all the fun of the creative process as well as the vulnerability and patience the Lord creates in me as he draws me closer to himself.

I look forward to seeing this year unfold, and I look forward to sharing about how I see creativity happening in and around me.

What’s your word this year?
